System to System data exchange
The organization and delivery of healthcare services is an information-intensive effort. It is an accepted fact that no single system fits the needs of every aspect of the healthcare industry. Information which is resident in one system may be required for another system to perform its primary function. Thus, the requirement for divergent systems to communicate is rapidly being identified as one of the more significant information technology challenges of the day.
Systems may differ in hardware architecture, software language, communications protocol, data storage structure or more basic data formats. Intersystem or inter-device communications requires the development of an interfacing communications protocol.
ApolloLIMS has adopted the HL7 protocol as the principal communication method when communicating with another system. ApolloLIMS has a fully integrated HL7 engine and does not depend on third party vendors to supply HL7 functionality. The status and control of HL7 interfaces is handles within the ApolloLIMS menu structure.
As an additional module, ApolloLIMS imports specimen orders and patient demographic information from a foreign system by listening on a dedicated network port and receiving HL7 formatted records. Raw data records are reformatted and made available to the accession process. The export of test results is also in HL7 format and can be directed to network or non-network submitters to be processed into their respective databases.
The ApolloLIMS system interface can be configured as a uni or bidirectional interface and can accommodate demographics, result and order transmission.
ApolloLIMS internal system codes can be translated to several standard coding systems such as CPT, ICD9, SNOMED, and LOINC.
